MASTERING THE MASTER BEDROOM.

14.05.2020

A home’s master bedroom needs to work both as part of the wider whole, and as a space that can exist independently of the rest of your house – a sanctuary that you can retreat to, not only for a good night’s sleep but to be inspired, relaxed and reenergised.

First-time home builders have a lot of plates to spin, so it can be easy to let details slip through the cracks if you’re going it alone. Not to worry, with a team like Classic Builders on your side, we can help you consider all options to ensure every last room of your new home is perfect. To help, we’ve put together this guide that covers the top five things you want to remember when putting together a master bedroom. Read on to find out what they are!

1. THINK ABOUT STORAGE

Can we ever have enough storage in our homes? Finding space for storage in your master bedroom can be difficult, but if not planned well, you might end up with stuffed wardrobes that threaten to avalanche when opened, or boxes beneath your bed (which let’s be honest, you will probably never access).

A great way to solve this issue is to integrate storage solutions directly into your design, maximising every inch of space. This approach is especially useful for smaller spaces but requires clever solutions and good use of the space that’s available. Keeping your storage front and centre as an aesthetic choice can not only allow you to show off your prized possessions by utilising them as décor, it also helps you keep track of exactly how much stuff you have, and what you’re actually using. Floating shelves and bookcases are on-trend to show off prized possessions.

A must-have in the modern master bedroom is a luxurious walk-in wardrobe. Create a home for all your treasures with a walk-in ‘robe appointed with racks, drawers and shelves.

2. CREATE A SENSE OF SPACE

Some people are happy to have their master bedroom be just that – a bed room. For others, the bedroom is a cosy retreat to unwind after a busy day, or a calm, inspiring space to be creative.

Consider a plan which allows room for a comfortable occasional chair, to dive into a good book. Think about a corner nook for a table to play Scrabble, or a desk to indulge your inner artist. If any of these ideas have you dreaming, consider adding an extra few square meters to your master bedroom to create a more dynamic sense of space, where you can enjoy alone time away from the main social areas in your home.

3. KEEP ARTWORK AND ACCENTS IN MIND

Even after a day of pure chaos, a well-designed master bedroom is the one place you can go to regroup. When thinking about colour choices, keep your ideal of an oasis in mind. The colours should sooth, and make you feel comfortable.

If you’re thinking of hanging artwork, plan this when you’re designing the room. Do you drool over large prints framed directly over the bed? Better not place a window there. Have you always loved the idea of a vintage bookshelf chocked full of books? Consider leaving a big wall blank – no windows or doors. Placing artwork strategically to draw attention makes a space much more inviting.

4. EMBRACE NATURAL LIGHT

Natural light has an incredible ability to make you feel GOOD! For most of the homes we design, we’ll endeavour to place the master bedroom on the corner. Why? This increases ventilation and helps natural light pour into the room.

Natural lighting is so important for boosting productivity and improving wellbeing. It makes your bedroom feel less like an office cubicle and more like a home, while allowing views out to your garden and landscaping.

Windows also provide ventilation, making your bedroom a healthier, happier place.

5. MAKE YOUR BEDROOM YOUR SANCTUM WITH A PRIVATE ENSUITE

More and more Kiwi families are seeing just how easy life can be with an ensuite.

Ensuites provide a space to get ready in the morning and relax without sharing the space with in-laws, kids or guests. I.e. no more queuing for the bathroom to get ready in the morning! As a bonus, because this is your sanctum, you can leave it as tidy (or messy) as you desire.

For luxe relaxation, consider upgrading your ensuite. Add a standalone bath, if you have the space for the ultimate no distractions, pamper me experience. Upgrade the benchtop to stone and consider adding a his-and-hers vanity. These little extra touches will make a world of difference considering all the time you will spend in your ensuite.
